Types of Air Purifier And What Pollutants They Remove

Post date: September 5th, 2011

I’m going to discuss the different types of air purifier technology and which types are best for removing particular air pollutants. If you react to a particular allergen, for example, you’ll want to know which type of air purifier removes it most efficiently. If your problems is formaldehyde, you’ll want to know the best way to remove it from your home. In these two cases the answer will be very different.

Be sure to check out my article on Indoor Pollution And Health Problems which has a lot of information about the types of air pollutants and what size the pollutants are.

There are three main categories of pollutants that you need to be concerned with:

  1. Gaseous pollutants or volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  2. Bacteria and viruses.
  3. Particulate matter

These three need very different purification technologies. However, various technologies are often combined together in one air purifier model in order to increase its effectiveness in removing the full range of pollutants. Let’s look at each of these in turn.

Indoor Air Pollution & Health Problems

Post date: September 4th, 2011

Let’s take  a look at how indoor air pollution affects you. All sorts of airborne particles are present in the air and can be detrimental to your health and especially if you are allergic to any of the particles as many people are.

Indoor air pollution is among the top five environmental health risks. One solution is to ventilate your home adequately. However, this isn’t always possible because of weather conditions or because of pollution in the outdoor air. If you are allergic to pollen, ventilation is not going to help you during the hayfever season.

A second solution is to clean the indoor air either using a whole house filtration system or portable room air purifiers.

A third solution is to remove sources in the home which produce pollutants. For example, you could remove furniture which is giving out formaldehyde.

Indoor  air pollution: What Are The Causes?

There are two broad categories to consider:

  1. Particulate matter
  2.  Gaseous pollutants

Let’s take a look at these two categories in detail.

Air Purifier Reviews

Post date: September 2nd, 2011

Air Purifier ReviewsHi! I’m Jeremy Johnson. My purpose with this Air Purifier Reviews website is to help people with the overwhelming task of choosing the right air purifier for their needs. I will be writing specific articles about how to choose the best air purifier for particular groups of people such as allergy sufferers.

I aim to provide as much factual information as I can about each air purifier that I review as well as incorporating customers’ feedback about the product.

As one person, I obviously cannot buy every air purifier and, in any case, my own reaction to it would only be one person’s opinion.

So, as far as the facts go, I collect the objective facts from the following sources:

  1. The manufacturer’s website and manual
  2. The Clean Air Delivery Rate website at www.cadr.org which is maintained by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers(www.aham.org)
  3. The Energy Star website (www.energystar.gov) which is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. An air purifier which has earned the Energy Star meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set down by the EPA and US Department of Energy.

Whirlpool AP51030K Whispure Air Purifier Review

Post date: August 28th, 2011

The Whirlpool AP51030K Whispure Air Purifier has a two stage cleaning process which is suitable for large sized room up to 490 square feet. It has a carbon pre-filter and a true HEPA filter which will filter particles of 0.3 microns and larger. This means it will clean up airborne particles such as dust, pet dander, pollen, tobacco smoke, fabric fibers and mold spores.

It has indicator lights to tell you when each filter needs replacing which means you can forget about them until the light shows the time has come.

Of course, it makes sense to have a more powerful air purifier like this in a smaller room also if you want very efficient filtering and especially if you want to keep it on a lower setting most of the time. Bear in mind that the quoted room size from the Association of  Home Appliance Manufacturers is for the high setting.

The model has four fan speeds plus a sleep setting. For the most efficiency, it’s best to keep it on the highest setting wherever possible.

This unit was recommended by Consumer Reports and has received overwhelmingly good reviews on the Amazon website.
