Honeywell QuietCare 17000-N Air Purifier

The Honeywell QuietCare 17000-N air purifier is a white portable model with a handle on top which has a permanent true HEPA filter and a carbon pre-filter. The HEPA filter captures 99.97% of common household airborne particles such as dust, cat dander, tobacco smoke and mold spores. The HEPA filter can be vacuumed and has a life of one to three years.

This model has QuietCare which is a sound-reducing technology to give quiet performance and also SurroundSeal technology which helps reduce air leaks around the filter to ensure that all the air passes through the filter.

It has a soft-touch control panel with a three speed fan and is good for rooms up to 200 square feet (14 feet by 14 feet).

This model is very reasonably priced for an air purifier with a true HEPA filter and effective for medium sized rooms. If you want an economy model which is effective with dust and allergens, this could well suit you. But if you want something to remove gaseous pollutants and volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde, then you need to look at other models with more than just a HEPA filter.

Honeywell QuietCare 17000-N Air Purifier Filter Type

The Honeywell QuietCare model has a two-stage filtering process comprising:

• Carbon pre-filter which reduces odors and also prevent the coarser particles reaching the HEPA filter and shortening its life. The pre-filter need replacing at least every three months.
• Permanent true HEPA filter which should last one to three years depending upon the level of pollution in the room. It removes airborne particles down to 0.3 microns including such things as household dust, animal dander, mold spores and so on.

There are Intelli-Check monitors which let you know when each filter needs replacing. The HEPA filter replacement is HEPA Replacement Filter HRF-11N and you need two of them.  The carbon pre-filter replacement is Replacement Pre-filter 38002.

Fan Speed

This model has three fan speeds: low, medium and high. The high setting is the noisiest. It may be best to use that when you’re out of the room. It’s best to leave an air purifier running for 24 hours a day.

The Honeywell 17000-N is suitable for rooms up to a size of 200 square feet. This means it’s good for small and medium sized rooms up to around 14 feet by 14 feet. The model should be kept at least three feet away from walls or furniture.

The Clean Air Delivery Rate is certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers after testing in independent third party laboratories. For the Honeywell QuietCare 17000-N air purifier the results are :

AHAM specify that the tobacco smoke rating should be at least two thirds of the room size in square feet. This means this purifier is rated for a room of 200 square feet.

Cons:

• Some people find it too noisy although many others say it is quiet.
• It will not filter out gaseous or volatile organic compounds (no HEPA filter will).
• It has a blue LED to indicate the fan speed and some people find it too bright in the bedroom. You may need to put some black tape over it if so.
