Honeywell HHT-011 Filter Type

The Honeywell HHT-011 had a three stage filtration system:

  • a washable pre-filter which can be shaken to clean or washed in warm water
  • a permanent HEPA-type filter which can be vacuumed to clean. An electronic indicator shows when it’s ready for cleaning
  • optional negative ionizer.

The pre-filter is located just behind the front grill and is designed to capture the larger particles which would clog up the HEPA-type filter if allowed to reach it.

The HEPA-type filter captures up to 95% of airborne particles down to 2 microns including mold spores, pollen, pet dander, smoke and dust particles. You should note that this is a HEPA-type and not true HEPA. A true HEPA filter captures 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns. A HEPA-type filter captures particles as small as 2 microns.

If you only need a basic level of air cleaning, this may suffice. For example, you may want a dust collector or you may be allergic to larger sized particles such as some pollens. However, if you have serious allergies to smaller particles than 2 microns, you are going to need something better.  You could take a look at the not too expensive Honeywell 50250 as an alternative.

If you choose to use the ionizer, it produces negatively charged ion which are then attracted to positive ions in the air or in surfaces in the room. The larger air particles fall to ground to be vacuumed or are drawn back into the air purifier. The particles which attach to surfaces can be dusted up.

Fan Speed

The Honeywell HHT-011 model has three fan speeds: low, medium and high. It’s good to put the air purifier on high when you aren’t in the room so that you get the best cleaning effect. You can then use it on low or medium when you are in the room and need a quieter environment.

Coverage Area

Suitable for a single room up to 85 square feet. This means a room of about 9.2 feet by 9.2 feet which means it’s good for small rooms. You could use it in small bedrooms, the kitchen, an office and so on. The great thing about this model is that it’s so easy to carry around. You can put it just where you need it.

To get the best effect in coverage, you should keep the unit switched on 24 hours a day and seven days a week, keep the windows and doors closed and have it on the highest setting whenever possible. Also, you should keep the surrounding area and the air purifier itself clean so that unnecessary dirt is not drawn into the unit, clogging up and reducing the effectiveness of the filters.

Clean Air Delivery Rate

The Clean Air Delivery Rate is certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers after testing in independent third party laboratories. For the Honeywell HHT-011 model the results are :

Type of ParticleCADR
Dust55
Tobacco Smoke55
Pollen65

AHAM specify that the tobacco smoke rating should be at least two thirds of the room size in square feet. This means this purifier is rated for a room of 85 square feet. This model also satisfies the required ozone limits.

Features

Here are some of the features of the Honeywell HHT-011

  • Illuminated control panel on top of the unit
  • Nightlight for soft illumination which you can switch on and off
  • Ionizer which can be optionally switched on or off
  • Electronic indicator lights up when main filter is due for cleaning.

Noise Level

At lowest setting, you wouldn’t notice the sound at all if the TV was on or anyone was talking. Quite a few people do find the highest setting too noisy. It’s best to use that when you aren’t in the room to do some heavy duty cleaning! Most people are quite happy with the low or medium setting.

With a lot of air purifiers, as with this one, there is some disagreement about the noisiness of any model. This just shows the subjectivity of people where noise is concerned. Some people like some white noise to help them sleep. Others cannot tolerate any noise.

Dimensions

The dimensions are 14.7 by 11.2 by 7 inches. The air purifier weighs 6.5 pounds. The unit should be placed at least three feet from any wall or furniture. It’s small enough to place on almost any piece of furniture and can be placed vertically or horizontally, making it quite flexible.

“Have had this on in a bedroom for most of the time since we received it. The noise level is just as others have said, similar to a fan and perfect for “white noise” as a sleeping aid. It really pulls the dust and cat hair from the room. We’ll be buying 2 more later this summer for … (read more here: Honeywell HHT-011 Review)”

“My daughter has severe cat allergies that result in frequent use of an inhaler for the asthma caused by the allergies…I purchased two of the Honeywell air purifiers and hoped they would help even a little. Since my daughter has had them in her apartment she has not had to use her inhaler and feels tremendously better… (read more here: Honeywell HHT-011 Review)”

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  •  3 year limited warranty
  • Low price
  • Permanent HEPA-type filter which can be cleaned and so saves money
  • The ionizer is optional and can be switched on or off as you like

Cons:

  • Some people think it’s too noisy – most think it’s fine on the low and medium settings
  • Doesn’t have a true HEPA filter and only captures 95% of particles down to 2 microns. This is fine if you don’t need to remove airborne particles down to 0.3 microns and want a cheaper model.
