Honeywell 50250 Review
Post date: August 31st, 2011
The Honeywell 50250 is a powerful model which is suitable for larger rooms up to 390 square feet or around 20 by 20 feet. For the price it does a lot of air cleaning!
It has a two stage filtering process using a carbon pre-filter and a true, permanent HEPA filter.
It has a patented 360 degree air intake and discharge system. The air is taken in at the bottom of the unit and discharged at the top but in a 360″ circle which allows excellent circulation of the purified air around the room.

Honeywell 50250 99.97% Pure HEPA Round Air Purifier Filter Type
The Honeywell 50250 has a true and permanent HEPA filter. As well as removing 99.97% of common airborne particles like dust, pollen, tobacco smoke, mold spore and cat dander as small as 0.3 microns, the glass fiber material of the HEPA filter also removes up to 100% of bacteria and viruses. An Intelli-Check indicator lights up when it’s time to clean your HEPA filter which you can do with a vacuum cleaner.
It’s wise to use a HEPA vacuum cleaner or otherwise to take the filter outside to clean it. If not, you will be reintroducing some of the collected dust back into the room. You should be aware that even so-called permanent filters will need replacing eventually as their performance degrades with time and cleaning.
The carbon pre-filter (model 38002) helps to remove household odors and prevents the coarser airborne particles reaching the HEPA filter and thereby extending its life. An Intelli-Check indicator lights up when it’s time to replace your pre-filter. It’s advisable to at least replace the pre-filter every three months.
This model has SurroundSeal HEPA filter technology which minimizes air leaks and ensures all the air drawn into the air purifier passes through the HEPA filter.
Be aware that when you initially run the unit, the pre-filter will cause a chemical smell. You may want to run it in the garage for a few hours to get rid of this before you run it in the house.
Fan Speed
TheHoneywell 50250 has three fan speeds: turbo, day and sleep.
You should be aware that there is a slight vibration when the air purifier is at the low fan speed. This is normal and is due to the slow air build up across the HEPA filter.
The unit’s power consumption at the lowest speed is 50 watts, at medium speed 120 watts and at high speed 170 watts. This is not energy star rated performance.
Coverage Area
The Honeywell 50250 model is suitable for a room up to 390 square feet. This means a room of about 20 by 20 feet. So, it’s suitable for most rooms including quite larger ones.
Clean Air Delivery Rate
The Clean Air Delivery Rate is certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers after testing in independent third party laboratories. For the Honeywell 50250 model the results are :
| Type of Particle | CADR |
|---|---|
| Dust | 250 |
| Tobacco Smoke | 250 |
| Pollen | 250 |
AHAM specify that the tobacco smoke rating should be at least two thirds of the room size in square feet. This means this purifier is rated for a room of 390 square feet. This model also satisfies the required ozone limits.

“Yeah, it’s a bit loud on the high setting as people warned about, but not nearly as bad as I was expecting. It sounds like a normal fan does on high. On the sleep mode (lowest setting) I didn’t even notice it after a couple minutes. It’s actually kind of soothing. BUT the most important thing, I immediately noticed a difference in air quality … (read more here: Honeywell 50250 Review)”
“But since we got the first one for the living room we added one more to the bedroom. Now you walk down our hallway gagging on the scent and odors but as soon as you open our door you are greeted by the clean smelling air and the sound of the filter cleaning it.
