The Holmes HAP242-UC air purifier is an attractive slim, desktop air purifier which can be positioned either horizontally or vertically to maximize whatever space you have available. It’s suitable for small rooms up to about 109 square feet.
This is a basic economical model with a HEPA-type filter, washable foam pre-filter and optional ionizer. It captures up to 99% of all airborne particles down to microns including such things as dust, pet dander, pollen and mold spores.
The HEPA-type filter also is fortified with Arm and Hammer baking soda to assist in absorbing and eliminating odors.

Holmes HAP242-UC Air Purifier Filter Type
This model has a three stage cleaning process incorporating:
- A washable foam pre-filter
- A HEPA-type filter which captures up to 99% of airborne particles down to 2 microns. It has Arm and Hammer baking soda fortification to help absorb and get rid of odors.
- Optional ionizer.
The HEPA-type replacement filter is HAPF30 and typically lasts from three to six months.
Fan Speed
The Holmes HAP242-UC has three cleaning speeds: low, medium and high. The manufacturer recommends keeping it set to medium as the normal setting. You can switch to low for a quieter sound for sleep. High should be used when there are high levels of pollution to clear.
Coverage Area
This model is suitable for small rooms up to 109 square feet or about 10.5 feet and 10.5 feet and so great for small bedrooms, an office or a small kitchen.
Clean Air Delivery Rate
The Clean Air Delivery Rate is certified by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers after testing in independent third party laboratories. For the Honeywell 50250 model the results are :

AHAM specify that the tobacco smoke rating should be at least two thirds of the room size in square feet. This means this purifier is rated for a room of 109 square feet. This model doesn’t have Energy Star rating.

Noise Level
The Holmes HAP242-UC is very quiet on the low setting. On medium and high some reviewers found it a bit loud on the high setting.

Pros & Cons
Pros:
- Cheap to buy
- Compact desktop model
- Very efficient for the price
- 3 year limited warranty.
Cons:
- The price of filters can be more than the unit over a year if you have to change every three months.
- Unit gets dusty and some say difficult to clean.
