Air Purifier Reviews

Air Purifier ReviewsHi! I’m Jeremy Johnson. My purpose with this Air Purifier Reviews website is to help people with the overwhelming task of choosing the right air purifier for their needs. I will be writing specific articles about how to choose the best air purifier for particular groups of people such as allergy sufferers.

I aim to provide as much factual information as I can about each air purifier that I review as well as incorporating customers’ feedback about the product.

As one person, I obviously cannot buy every air purifier and, in any case, my own reaction to it would only be one person’s opinion.

So, as far as the facts go, I collect the objective facts from the following sources:

  1. The manufacturer’s website and manual
  2. The Clean Air Delivery Rate website at www.cadr.org which is maintained by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers(www.aham.org)
  3. The Energy Star website (www.energystar.gov) which is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy. An air purifier which has earned the Energy Star meets strict energy efficiency guidelines set down by the EPA and US Department of Energy.

Honeywell 50101 Air Purifier Review

Post date: October 12th, 2011

honeywell 50101The Honeywell 50101 air purifier is a model which is suitable for small to medium-sized rooms up to 150 square feet or around 12 by 12 feet. For the price it does a lot of air cleaning!

Honeywell 16200 Air Purifier Review

Post date: October 10th, 2011

honeywell 16200 air purifierThe Honeywell 16200 air purifier is a true economy model. It’s a compact desktop model which is suitable for small rooms of up to eighty square feet such as a bedroom, an office or a small kitchen. At present, it’s a bargain at under $50 at Amazon. It can be put on a table or on the floor and can be placed horizontally or vertically to save space.

It’s also pretty handy if you want to take an air purifier with you when you travel.

It has a four-stage cleaning process comprising a washable pre-filter, a HEPA-type filter,a carbon filter to absorb household odors and an ionizer.

If all you need is a basic economy model, this model can’t be beat on the price. Since it has only a HEPA-type filter, it will not be as efficient at removing the smaller particles down to 0.3 microns as a true HEPA filter.  However, you’d have to go up in price to get a true HEPA filter. It does a better job than the Honeywel HHT-011 whose HEPA-type filter only captures 95% of particles.

Honeywell QuietCare 17000-N Air Purifier

Post date: October 3rd, 2011

Honeywell QuietCare 17000-N air purifierThe Honeywell QuietCare 17000-N air purifier is a white portable model with a handle on top which has a permanent true HEPA filter and a carbon pre-filter. The HEPA filter captures 99.97% of common household airborne particles such as dust, cat dander, tobacco smoke and mold spores. The HEPA filter can be vacuumed and has a life of one to three years.

This model has QuietCare which is a sound-reducing technology to give quiet performance and also SurroundSeal technology which helps reduce air leaks around the filter to ensure that all the air passes through the filter.

It has a soft-touch control panel with a three speed fan and is good for rooms up to 200 square feet (14 feet by 14 feet).

This model is very reasonably priced for an air purifier with a true HEPA filter and effective for medium sized rooms. If you want an economy model which is effective with dust and allergens, this could well suit you. But if you want something to remove gaseous pollutants and volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde, then you need to look at other models with more than just a HEPA filter.

Surround Air XJ-3800 Intelli-Pro Air Purifier

Post date: September 25th, 2011

Surround Air XJ-3800 Intelli-Pro Air PurifierIf you are looking for a lot of technology at a reasonable price, then check out this Surround Air XJ-3800 Intelli-Pro air purifier review. It includes a total of seven different methods for cleaning the air! You don’t find a HEPA filter, photocatalytic oxidation, ionization and ultraviolet light together in most air purifiers.

It also has indicators to tell you everything you need to know – when the filters need replacing, when the electrostatic plate needs cleaning, when the UV unit is working, how clean the air is, whether it detects dust particles, allergens or odors.

As you can see on the left, it looks very high tech. It’s also a very quiet model when on the lower fan speeds. In fact, its lowest setting is called “quiet”.

Hoover WH10600 Air Purifier With TiO2 Technology Review

Post date: September 12th, 2011

Hoover WH10600 Air Purifier With TiO2 TechnologyThe Hoover WH10600 air purifier with TiO2 technology comes in the form of an attractive sleek black tower which combines both HEPA filter and photocatalytic oxidation technology. This means that as well as removing air borne particles down to 0.3 microns, it’s also effective in killing microorganisms.

It’s suitable for small rooms up to 79 square feet. If you’re looking for an air purifier for a larger room, you’ll need to check out other brands on our website because this model is the most powerful one in the Hoover range. It’s a pity they don’t produce any models for larger rooms.

This is a very user friendly model with remote control and also intuitive push buttons on the top of the unit. It can detect the level of airborne particles and if set to auto will adjust the fan speed as necessary. An LCD display on top of the unit changes color with the purity of the air – blue (good quality), orange (poor quality) and red (bad quality).

An LED indicator tells you when it’s time to replace the HEPA filter.

Choosing The Best Air Purifier

Post date: September 7th, 2011

When it comes to choosing the best air purifier, it can be overwhelming with the great number of models and the different types of air purifier. Where do you start?

In this article, I’ll explain some of the main factors to consider. Choosing the best air purifier for your needs will depend on what your requirements are:

Choosing the Best Air Purifier: Room Size

best air purifierProbably the first important point in choosing the best air purifier is to make sure that you buy a model which is powerful enough for the room size that you need it for.

The manufacturer of a particular model will almost certainly list the room size that it is suitable for. However, it’s a good idea to check it yourself with an independent source. If you want to double check you should go to the Clean Air Delivery Rate website and check out your model.

You will find that some models aren’t listed. That just means they haven’t been tested by the Association of  Home Appliance Manufacturers who own the CADR website. Only manufacturers who sign up for AHAM certification are listed on the CADR website. Some high quality manufacturers like IQAir for example (one of the most efficient models used in medical settings as well as homes) don’t agree with the test procedures of AHAM which they regard as flawed.

How Effective Are Air Purifiers?

Post date: September 6th, 2011

One of the most often asked questions is “How effective are air purifiers?” So, we need to look at the filtration efficiency of a particular air purifier technology. There are two standards to be aware of: the American and the European.

How Effective Are Air Purifiers: American HEPA standard

Let’s take a look at the true HEPA filter as the simplest scenario. It’s a basic mechanical filter which captures particles in the air.
A true HEPA filter has to capture at least 99.97% of airborne particles of all particles down to 0.3 microns. This is the minimum standard for a true HEPA filter set by the United States Department of Energy (DOE).

You should note that this percentage only relates to air that actually passes through the filter. If there is leakage around the filter, then the percentage will be less for air which passes through the air purifier. This is why the seal around the filter is as important as the filter itself. A true HEPA filter will usually capture some particles smaller than this size also.
